Iqra — The Divine Command to Read

Description
This dramatic and allegorical painting centers around the
word "اقْرَأْ"
(Iqra)—the first word revealed in the Qur’an, meaning “Read”—set within a
blazing red orb that radiates divine power. Below it, a group of primitive,
ape-like figures engage in various materialistic and hollow rituals—clutching
vases, bowls, and scrolls—yet seemingly ignorant of the transformative message
above them. Their physical evolution is apparent, but their spiritual and
intellectual progress is stunted.
The contrast between the radiant divine command and the
grotesque, almost caricatured human forms underscores Sadequain’s searing
critique: despite access to divine knowledge, humanity often remains consumed
by base instincts and superficial pursuits. The red circle in the sky,
surrounded by fine calligraphy and intense black rays, functions like an
illuminated manuscript in the heavens—visible, yet ignored.
The surrounding landscape is littered with offerings and
symbols of civilization—books, instruments, artifacts—suggesting that
enlightenment is within reach, but lost to distraction or greed. With visual
allusions to creation, cosmic order, and revelation, Sadequain urges the viewer
to heed the call to knowledge, reflection, and inner awakening. This painting
is a profound reflection on the distance between divine instruction and human
behavior—a reminder that the power to evolve lies not just in physical form,
but in intellectual and spiritual pursuit.
