Description
In this cosmic and deeply philosophical painting, Sadequain
visualizes the act of divine creation, reimagining it through a blend of
Islamic calligraphy, abstract geometry, and celestial symbolism. A powerful
hand—echoing Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam—reaches out from a robed
figure with an intense gaze, channeling divine energy into the swirling fabric
of the universe. From this gesture emerges a brilliant tapestry of stars,
planets, moons, and galaxies, flowing like a river of light across the canvas.
Beneath this stream, a disoriented human figure lies upside
down, his feet in the air—a symbol of human confusion or the inversion of
divine order in the material world. To the right, an abstracted Earth floats
amidst heavenly bodies, while cacti and thorny plants emerge below, anchoring
the scene in the harshness of earthly existence.
The calligraphy framing the composition includes verses in
Urdu that reflect on the mystery of existence, the divine command (“Kun
fa-yakoon” – Be, and it is), and humanity’s struggle to comprehend its
place in the cosmos. Combining the metaphysical with the mathematical, the
spiritual with the scientific, this work exemplifies Sadequain’s vision of art
as a bridge between reason, revelation, and the awe of creation itself.
