Description
This breathtaking ceiling mural by Sadequain, adorning the Lahore Museum’s Islamic Gallery (1973–74), is one of his most spiritually profound and architecturally integrated works. Spanning the entire ceiling, it transforms the gallery into a celestial chamber — a visual journey through divine revelation, cosmic harmony, and human enlightenment.
At its center, radiating from a golden sunburst, Sadequain inscribed Qur’anic verses in his signature calligraphic style, surrounded by intricate geometric patterns, vegetal motifs, and abstracted forms that echo both the rhythms of the cosmos and the architecture of faith. The luminous blue background evokes infinity and transcendence, while the interwoven gold and earthy tones symbolize divine light piercing the material world.
Sadequain’s composition fuses art, science, and spirituality — every stroke and curve reflecting his belief that knowledge and faith are intertwined. The calligraphy, dynamic yet harmonious, transforms sacred text into a symphony of movement, turning the ceiling into an illuminated manuscript on a monumental scale.
This mural stands not only as a masterpiece of modern Islamic art but also as a philosophical statement — a universe of meaning painted above human heads, reminding viewers to look upward toward both artistic and spiritual elevation.
