The Burden of Civilization

By: Sadequain Ahmad Visit Profile

$350.00

In this powerful and allegorical composition, Sadequain
presents a visual chronicle of humanity’s relentless march through labor,
ambition, and illusion. On the left, figures carry tools, weapons, and
children—symbols of generational struggle and inheritance. They move with
determination, seemingly blind to the deeper forces that shape their journey.
The central characters, muscular and intense, hammer and forge, sculpting their
world with brute strength, but also with narrow focus, unaware of the consequences.

To the right, a totemic figure stands covered in thorns and
adorned with masks and crowns, suggesting a deceptive idol—perhaps representing
power, false gods, or societal constructs. A serpent slithers upward beside
this figure, an ancient symbol of temptation, wisdom, or danger. Urdu verses
above and below the image, drawn from classical poetry or Sadequain’s own hand,
caution against blind obedience and idol-worship, calling instead for clarity
of thought and moral courage.

The work reflects Sadequain’s deep critique of modern
society—its exploitation of labor, its obsession with appearances, and its
detachment from spiritual and ethical grounding. A fusion of calligraphy,
mythology, and human struggle, this painting captures the eternal tension
between creation and corruption.
